Young Person’s Free Bus Travel Scheme

Young Person’s Free Bus Travel Scheme

5-21 year olds living in Scotland can apply for free bus travel from 31 January 2022.  Parents or guardians of under 16s must apply on their behalf and give approval for the free bus travel card to be activated.  Children under 5 years old already travel on buses for free.

The quickest and easiest way to apply is online, for more details on how to apply visit the Transport Scotland website.

Apply online – getyournec.scot

You will need to sign in using your mygov.scot account.  Register for a mygov.scot account if you don’t already have one.

You will need proof of you and your child’s identity and proof of your address.

Proof of identity for a parent/guardian can be a passport, driving licence or YOTI account (YOTI is a secure digital ID)

More information about what proof you need.

If you need help to apply online please see the guidance, FAQs and videos on how to apply on the National Entitlement Card website.

If you can’t apply online, you can apply via Midlothian Council.  This may take much longer than applying online as Midlothian Council must carry out a number of checks before any application can be approved.

High demand is expected during January and February which will also affect how quickly Midlothian Council can process applications.  Forms are available from the school office on request.

Please click here to read the Frequently Asked Questions section on Midlothian Council’s website for answers to specific queries on the scheme.
